How to Pick Out the Perfect Nail Polish - DESIGN NAIL ARTS

Have you been trying to find the perfect nail polish? Chances are, you're unsure about which color you should choose. Colors are available in a variety of shades and it's difficult choosing one that will compliment you the most.
Although one shade might look good on someone else, the same shade may not look good on you. The following tips will help you choose the perfect polish for you:
1. If you want your nails to look great and stand out, remember to consider your skin tone. Light skinned people do best with colors that are light and medium, and darker skin tones look best with darker colors.
Therefore, if you are looking for a shade of pink to wear on your nails and you have a light skin tone, choose a light shade of pink and if you have a dark skin tone, choose a pink in a darker shade.
2. Several nail stores have samples available so that you can try out different colors.

To make the most of using nail polish samples, take some paper or a napkin in with you to brush the the different color samples on. Afterward, place your finger on the paper by each color and compare the shades to see which color will look the best one you.
3. Remember there are several types of polish to consider. Some popular types of nail polish are the glitter and the matte. It's best to choose one of those two if you're still new to purchasing polish. Using glitter or creating patterns with your nail polish are perfect if you're going out with the girls or to the club.
4. Think about your environment before choosing a color and keep your colors plain and basic if you're planning to attend a business meeting or an interview. If you choose to use unusual patterns or colors for your nail polish you may draw unnecessary and unwanted attention to your hands. If it's not a hand modeling interview or business meeting, stick to the basics for a more positive effect.
5. Be willing to splurge a little and select nail polish from the brands that cost a little more. Nail polish this is more costly is also more likely not to cause any damage to your nails because they are usually organic.

The cheaper polishes that are available can sometimes contain chemicals that will damage your nails as well as the environment.
6. Consult a professional for an opinion on which color would look the best, for example, a nail salon employee. Have fun and be willing to experiment with different shades and types of nail polish.

How to Be Your Best As a Nail Technician - DESIGN NAIL ARTS

Some may say its because of the standard of work produced at the salon? Some may think it's the prices? Others may feel it's the location?
I believe something else and I would like to tell you a bit of what I think gets clients into one salon over another.
I have always had very busy Nail Salons wherever I have started one up. Different towns, different locations -hair salon, beauty salon, independent and at home- it hasn't really made much difference to my success so I would like to take out of the equation that the LOCATION of your business makes a difference to clients.
The prices at my Nail Salons have always compared with those in the area and sometimes exceeded them. So I don't feel a low price is always a big drawcard to discerning nail clients. (I'm not talking about the one off clients or special occasion clients here but the clients that are long term and devoted to your salon.)
I'm sure you have seen Nail Salons where the work is not high quality and yet they still seem to get a lot of clients? There are 2 types of salons here-
1. The first are the Nail Bars where the service/work is not a good standard as a whole but the clients that go there want a fast, convenient job. With more education for our clients they would stop going to places that cause damage to their nails.
2. The second type are the Nail Technicians who have finished their training and who are set up independently, are not at a high standard of work yet and still get a full client list!
It can be really frustrating sometimes if you are a Nail Technician with a very high standard of work and struggle to get clients over these other salons! I urge you though-don't give up just yet!
The main reason for achieving my full client lists with ease? I believe clients come to see YOU! The clients that followed me everywhere I went, the ones that would travel 3 hours for a 1 hour appointment and the clients that wouldn't even have considered going somewhere else, all came to see me. Sure, my work was great too, and the superb customer service, but honestly, they loved coming to chat with me for an hour!
So it is really important to relate to your clients. If it doesn't come easily to you (which I find hard to believe if you have chosen nails as a career ) I would suggest you keep up to date with current news items, neighbourhood happenings and stay alert for useful tidbits of information that may help someone else! It is also very important to remember what is happening in the lives of your clients. This is easily done, either by memory or by writing notes on client cards.
Give your clients the best time ever when they come to see you for an appointment and I can assure you that not only will they keep coming back, they will bring all their friends too!

Nail Salon Hygiene - What Nail Artists Don't Tell While You're Getting Your Nails Done - DESIGN NAIL ARTS

I recently came across a fairly disturbing study on nail salon hygiene conducted by Choice magazine.
In this study, a group of lucky nail salon shadow shoppers was asked to visit professional nail salons and report on their hygiene levels. Over 50 nail salons were visited and, according to the study, more than a third of the salons visited were found to be unsatisfactory, with their main complaints being bad hygiene standards, poor customer service and shoddily done manicures.
Upon entering the salon, the participants were instructed to request a complete manicure, tell the nail artist that they had never had a professional manicure done before, then ask the salon professional to describe what the process entailed. After the session was over, each of the participants were asked to fill a questionnaire, reporting on various aspects of their experience - levels of hygiene observed, how long the manicure took and how much it cost and whether the experience was satisfactory or not.
According to the report, 92% of the technicians who attempted to use metal cuticle clippers on the shadow shoppers didn't put on gloves. Even worse, they did not use an implement that was package-sealed, even though half of the nail technicians claimed the instrument had been autoclaved (autoclaving is the process of heating water above boiling point in a pressurized device - it is the safest way to sterilize equipment).

The shoppers also reported several hygiene breaches on equipment such as nail files and buffers, which should either be disposable or cleaned between clients. A few salons had surfaces that weren't cleaned between clients and were covered in dust, or even pieces of skin. In one salon, a technician kept her dirty implements in the cash drawer.
Some of the actual comments from the survey participants regarding the low hygiene levels they experienced were as follows:
"The technician picked up the metal scissors ... used on someone else's feet ... she used them to cut some skin from around her own nail. She then went to use them on me."
"This salon had an overpowering smell that burnt my throat and made me feel ill."
"The technicians washed the handtowels in the foot spas."
"Counters and floors were dirty, instruments reused and technicians did not wash their hands at all."
"The technician had open wounds on her hands. I asked her to put gloves on."

Although different state departments of health have their own guidelines for health and safety that nail artists are supposed to follow, a basic requirement of infection control is hand washing - either with soap and water, or a 70% alcohol (or alcohol and chlorhexidine) rub. According to basic hygiene guidelines, both the nail artist and their clients should clean their hands before a manicure.
According to the reports submitted by the shadow shoppers, the majority weren't asked to wash their hands before the treatment, and only 8% of nail technicians were actually observed washing their hands directly before starting the manicure. 64% of nail salon workers didn't wash their hands and in 28% of the visits, the shoppers reported not being sure whether the nail technician had cleaned their hands or not.

What To Look For In A Nail Salon
Here are some of the things you look for when visiting a nail salon:
- Use only accredited salons and technicians and look for certifications of competency, which should be displayed prominently in the salon.
- The salon should be clean and tidy, with linen and towels changed between clients.
- All chemicals should be in clearly marked containers.
- Metal tools that could penetrate the skin should be sterilized in an autoclave.
- Non-disposable nail implements should be rinsed, scrubbed in tepid water and detergent and dried, or wiped with 70% alcohol between clients.
- Some nail salons keep implements especially set aside for each regular client. You should ask your nail technician to do this for you, if you are a regular client of a nail salon.
- Nail implements need to be clean and dry. Don't let anyone use an implement on you that's been left sitting in water, even if the water contains disinfectant.

- Don't use a foot spa if you've shaved your legs the night before or on the day of the pedicure, of if you have any cuts on your legs, as this makes you more vulnerable to infection.
- If you are having acrylic nails put on, ask your nail artist to explain the procedure, what products they're going to use and how to care for the nails at home.
- Don't be shy to ask questions about the manicure, the chemicals being used and how the implements have been cleaned.
The salon I normally go to is very professional and clean, the technicians are highly competent and certified and all procedures are explained in great detail when asked. So, I went ahead and pampered myself for almost an hour and got myself some beautiful nails (included in the manicure was a nail bath, filing and buffing and cuticle work) and a massage. Maybe next time I'll go for nail tattoos or those Tammy Taylor nails!

OPI Matte Black is Back - DESIGN NAIL ARTS

Sephoria is introducing the fall shades by OPI; today we are focusing on the most popular color which is OPI matte black. Keep in mind not everyone loves matte finishes; some women just love that high gloss look. Matte is the new look and a great fall alternative to French tips.
To Apply or Not to Apply
If you have never used a matte polish before it is key to know about how to apply it properly and what makes it different than most other nail polishes. Matte polish is extremely fast drying, so when you apply it you have to get it right the first time, be quick but careful.
We recommend at least 2 sometimes 3 thin coats of polish. It is possible to do 1 thick coat but it is a little more difficult. OPI Matte Black is available online for $8.00 which is a great deal.
Great Fall Trends
Matte polish may not be your favorite but it is a very popular fall trend, a lot of women prefer crème polishes for the fall but matte is quickly gaining ground. For those who just have to have glossy nails try switching to a satin finish, then to a matte, it will make the transition much easier.
3 Reasons to Love OPI Matte Black:
  • It is the perfect trendy fall look.
  • Great on a tight budget.
  • Will go with almost any outfit.
What About You
You will love that matte look, but we recommend buying one matte polish and trying it out first just to make sure that it is for you. Like everything else you will have to find the color that fits you it may not be OPI Matte Black, it could be any of the other matte colors.
Personally we love all of the matte colors, and we think you will too. You can also do a matte top coat as well it will add character to any polish job. Matte will add depth and for a change of pace you could put a gloss top coat over it.
Getting Down to Matte Tacks
For some girls it is really hard getting used to a non glossy nail polish like OPI matte black. A solid matte collection will go a long way this fall. We think you will absolutely love it, face it the matte trend is just ramping up and will be around for a long time, you had better be prepared.

Nail Salon Web Design Tips - DESIGN NAIL ARTS

Growing up as a child in suburban New Jersey, I don't remember seeing any nail salons along the local roads and highways.
mother never mentioned having to go to a nail salon; when she had someplace special to go it was to her regular beautician, who would soak her fingers, remove her cuticles and polish her nails.

How do I know this? Well...I was often dragged along with her to many a boring appointment. On occasion, I was bribed with the promise of a toy purchase, afterward.
There is Big Money in Long Fingernails
Today, professional nail care is a huge business. U.S. census data place the nail salon and spa service industry at over $35 billion annually. That figure doesn't include the retail sale of related professional beauty products, which at least accounts for another $7 billion annually.
According to "Nails" magazine, following an industry slump immediately after 9/11, the nail salon industry began growing rapidly again in 2002. By that year there were already more than 368,000 licensed nail technicians in the United States and over 51,000 licensed salons offering nail services to women and men. Today, there are at least 500,000 nail technicians in the United States and Canada alone.
Those who set up shop in the nail salon industry can expect to earn $35,000 in the first year of the business. However, those located in a high-traffic spots can expect to earn up to a six-figure income.
Do More than Just "Scratch" the Surface of Successful Marketing
So what ensures your success as a nail salon operator? Ultimately, it is one's ability to provide excellent services and create high levels of customer satisfaction. Having a good location may even be more critical, though. A high traffic location with good visibility will superbly position you to expose your business to many more new customers.
Please keep in mind that even the best "brick and mortar" location supported by some print ads is only a small part of your overall marketing effort. A quality web presence is also necessary to help with some of the heavy lifting when it comes to gaining significant consumer exposure.
Your website is your 24/7 storefront. It can help you make more sales, generate additional business leads, and display your talent to a much larger audience than you could ever imagine. When customers are looking for a new nail salon close to home, they will probably not find you by searching for your business name. They may not know it yet. But they will almost certainly "Google" you by your business type (nail salon) and location (your town). A search will most likely bring them to your website.
While others are searching for you, you and your business will be seeking a target audience of nail care consumers. Chances are they will be women and men, who live nearby or work reasonably close to your nail salon. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is very important if you want to be quickly and easily found among your local competitors. It makes very good business sense to place your website in the competent hands of skilled professionals, who possess this special knowledge and keep up with it.
Having your website come up on the front page of search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo will send a wave of customer traffic to your website increasing your appointments and expanding your e-mailing list. No question that this is a successful outcome for any nail salon.
Your Web Presence Must Be Attractive, Polished and Professional
Once visitors land at your website, what will they find there? Is it professional looking, easy to navigate, and customer-conversion ready with strong call-to-actions strategically placed, throughout? These are important considerations that must be addressed if you are to have an effective web presence.
To reach your desired call-to-actions (e.g. what do you want your website visitors to do next?), you must - first - be successful capturing your visitors' attention and holding it long enough for them to follow-through and eventually do business with you. Is there anything more important than this being your overall marketing goal?
To keep your website visitors interested in your business and wanting to reach out to you through your website, you will need to keep them "entertained" with information that is constantly changing and routinely updated. Give some thought to some of the things many other nail salon website owners have included on their own pages:
  • Catchy titles Like "You Can Have Beautiful Nails Like the Stars" gets people's attention
  • Quality photos and helpful videos
  • Useful beauty tips
  • Interesting content and unusual information that demonstrates your specialized expertise
  • Website "celebrations" to get customers in the holiday spirit
  • Video and written testimonials from your most satisfied customers are key influencers
  • Discounts and special incentives wherever and whenever possible
  • Features to benefit your customers such as online appointment setting tools
  • Website pages that load FAST. (This has even become a search-engine raking criteria. Slow loading pages frustrate and lose visitors.)
  • Frequent website updates with interesting and eye-catching content and graphics
If you are a decent writer or have someone else on hand who may be, one of the easiest ways to keep your website fresh and engaging for repeat visitors on a daily basis include a blog. You need not go overboard with your blog, either. Simply commit yourself to a post per week with a maximum of 500 words to accomplish this goal. Write about what interests your nail customers and demonstrates your knowledge and expertise in your field. Could be a new color, a new product, trends, photos of outrageous or amusing nail airbrush art, home-care tips. In addition, you can reasonably expand into other areas of beauty, makeup and skincare, as this is a logical extension.
Use your blog to give helpful information on a weekly basis. This is a key to attracting more people to your website!
By the way, don't forget to promote your website, blog and any social media pages that you set up within your e-mail signature. Also, promote them in any traditional advertising mediums that you may already be using. All of this wise effort should translate into more business for you and for your growing nail salon.
