Great Nail Manicure Tips

1. File your nails BEFORE removing old varnish
So many women remove old varnish and then begin filing their nails, but filing after using harsh varnish remover can cause your nails to split and weaken over time so file with the old varnish on for best results.
2. Filing to a square shape increases strength
The square-tipped nail is less likely to break under pressure. Remember to always file the nail in one direction to avoid rough edges and an uneven shapes.
3. Never file your nails after a bath
Nails that have been soaking for a while are softer than normal. They will be more likely to split when applying pressure and reshaping. Wait a couple of hours after a bath before beginning your manicure.

4. Lemon juice removes old varnish stains
Sometimes even after using remover to get rid of old varnish the nails can appear stained. Cut a lemon in half and rub gently in small circular motions over the nails to make the stains disappear.

5. STOP using nail brushes
They are harsh on your nails and cuticles. Treatment with nail brushes can also make the nail surface rough and uneven, reducing the effects of varnish. Instead switch to pointed cotton buds to clean underneath the nails, like the ones offered by Guru Make-up Emporium.

6. Use cuticle cream for a great manicure result
Cuticle creams soften the cuticles, making it easy and pain free to push them back during your manicure. Burt's Bees do a particularly good Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream. Try different products to see what works for you. After pushing the cuticles back you can use an orange stick wrapped in tissue to soften the effect.

7. Base coats stop nails from staining and drying out
Purchase a protective base coat like the ones offered by Cutex and other leading nail care brands. Applying the base coat before the varnish prevents the varnish from staining and keeps moisture in so your nails don't become brittle.
8. Paint the nail in only three strokes
Whether you're applying one coat or two, make sure you make one straight stroke down the middle and one down each side to avoid re-painting the same section. This keeps things even and gives the nails a long, slender shape. It's how the professionals do it.

9. Use a steady surface and leave time for drying
Rest your elbows on a table when applying the varnish and make sure you've left adequate time in your schedule for allowing the nails to dry. If the nails smudge you will need to remove the varnish and reapply to prevent a lumpy, uneven result.

10. Use rubber gloves when washing up
Prevent your nails from becoming soft and weak by wearing rubber gloves when washing up. This is also a great skincare tip for preventing your hands from drying out and for prolonging the effects of varnish after your manicure.
